Shania Twain Impresses Me a Lot

Last week, my friend Linda performed a solo of the Doobie Brothers song “Black Water” with Rock Voices, a community chorus that has branches throughout the U.S. To say she was on fire is an understatement.

I’m going to write about Linda and her musical journey in a subsequent blog. However, I’m bringing her up now, because her performance reminded me of one of my favorite live concert clips where the artist electrifies the audience.

The clip doesn’t feature famous footage of Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin or Queen.

It’s of Shania Twain singing “That Don’t Impress Me Much” at Chicago’s Grant Park in 2003. (See the video below.)

There are so many things to love about this video, but what I love most is her delightful connection with the audience’s young women and girls, who are seriously rocking out with Shania.

The song itself, and Shania’s electric delivery, may have given these young fans a feeling that they too could embrace who they are and what they want (and don’t want). Maybe that message even stayed with them long after the concert was over.
